Montana ZEMO – Porcelain hardneck variety.  Originated from the village of Zemo Surebi in the Supsa valley boarding the Adzaro-Imeretinian Mountains, Cochatauri Province, in the Republic of Georgia. Zemo can handle cold winter climates. During a taste test of 8 different garlic varieties, Zemo was chosen as one of the panels’ favorite by America’s Test Kitchen from Cook’s Illustrated magazine. Creamy white teardrop shaped bulbs, spicy garlic flavor and high allicin content.

Zemo Garlic Characteristics:  4 to 6 cloves per bulb. 25 to 30 cloves per pound. Late harvest. Stores 6 months. Zones 1 to 7. Produces scapes. Hot.

Killarney Red – Rocambole Hardneck Variety.  Easy to peel, making this variety popular in the kitchen. It has an outstanding strong and nutty flavor.  Can have very large bulbs.  Will withstand wetter climates in well drained soil and performs well in cold climates.  The plants are beautiful when growing with green/blue leaves.  The bulbs have pink wrappers with some brown.  Origin is unknown but believed to be from Idaho.

Killarney Red Characteristics:  Averages 9 cloves per bulb. One pound will average about 50-60 plants.  Stores about 3-4 months.

Transylvanian artichoke softneck variety. – Originated from the Transylvanian province of Romania, and brought to the U.S. by Chester Aaron. This softneck variety produces large bulbs with dappled patches of crimson red. It has a buttery smooth start that finishes with some heat (and of course it will chase off the vampires!) Akin to the Transylvanian Alps, this softneck thrives in cold winter climates. A huge producer, in the garden one pound of seed will yield over 80 plants. This Artichoke softneck varietal is an excellent choice for braiding due to it’s gorgeous red and purple bulb skin color.

Transylvanian Garlic Characteristics: 10 – 15 cloves per bulb. 85 – 95 cloves per pound. Early harvest variety. Stores 6 – 7 months. Recommended for Zones 2-10. Mild flavor.

Silver White – Silverskin softneck variety. Silverskins can grow in varied climates: from maritime, cool wet winters to arid, hot dry winters. In storage, they can handle more humidity than other softnecks, making them some of the longest storing garlic of all. The bulb skins are white with hints of pink and the flavor is spicy.
Silver White Garlic characteristics: 9-10 cloves per bulb • 60 to 75 cloves per pound • Mid to late harvest. Stores 8 to 10 months! • Zones 4 to 10 • Does not produce scapes • Hot
